At Rosa Parks Elementary School, we value the importance of a safe environment that is conducive to teaching and learning. The Learner Profiles are essential to our school's safety and positive climate. Our school community embraces the challenges that foster diverse learners. Currently, we are well on our way with teaching and learning through inquiry. Our students construct meaning and talk about their thinking. This is especially evident in hands-on scientific investigations and in mathematics. We understand the power of choice and lesson variety. Thus, our students share their learning through projects that are evaluated by a rubric. These open-ended opportunities for demonstrating mastery of standards-based education encourage creativity and diversity.

Currently, our students are beginning to speak Spanish, and they are learning to value other cultures. Our Spanish teacher is leading the way for discussions that feature how we are alike and how we are different. Our curriculum includes communities and cultures. We are learning about other perspectives and traditions.

Community service is an important part of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme. Examples of previous service projects are making "No-Sew" blankets to help the children and adults in the Hilda Barg Homeless Shelter ward off the winter chill; collecting 990 linear feet of canned goods for Operation Turkey; donating hats, mittens, gloves, and socks to needy children; participating in a Habitat for Humanity house dedication; and honoring military service men and women during a Veteran's Day program. At Rosa Parks, we strive to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world by taking action when a local or international need has been identified.

The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme is a good fit for our school community. We are honored to be the first authorized IB PYP school in Prince William County. Rosa Parks welcomes the life long learning that accompanies IB PYP.
