Our class loves our weekly readers published by Scholastic. Scholastic offers a Learn at Home program where students can access materials for THREE HOURS a day! This is an amazing opportunity for students to extend their learning at home. There are articles and stories, videos, and fun learning challenges. I highly encourage families to take advantage of this in case of school closures.

ORIGO - Core Mathematics Resources for Grades K-6

This year, PWCS implemented a new math curriculum called Origo. I am excited that you can now access their curriculum from home!

ORIGO At Home provides an intentional daily routine organized to introduce, reinforce, and extend the math concepts and skills students typically learn at this point in the school year.

Each of the weeks provides 5 daily activities organized around a specific math topic. To help establish a rhythm for learning at home, each day of the week has a focus:
Monday - Read & Discuss
Tuesday - Hands on Math
Wednesday - Problem-solving
Thursday - Game Day (Digital Practice)
Friday - Practice

Depending on your families needs and resources, you might complete multiple activities in a day or skip an activity from time to time. The learning from the Monday activity is especially important to set the week up for success, so I encourage you to complete the activities in order, even if you do not complete them all.

To start:
Choose United States, First Grade, and start at Week 1.
The lesson plan format provides everything needed for instruction and is written so that caregivers can implement it on their own. Students can engage in the work on a device or resources can be downloaded for printing. You can even print out all of the resources ahead of time to prepare for the week! Student resources are also available in Spanish.

The Bedtime Math app for iPhone/iPad or Android, available in both English and Spanish, is a great way for families to have fun with math together!  New findings from a University of Chicago study shows that Bedtime Math, already proven to boost kids’ math performance, has effects that last for years.

ready to wonder
Wonder of the Day

Wonderopolis.org is a great example of a resource that helps to encourage learning through reading. Wonderopolis develops an ongoing sense of wonder to instill a lifelong love for learning. Through the site, a student and his/her family can access a “Wonder of the Day” each and every day – for free. Not only will they learn intriguing facts, but they’ll also be exposed to new vocabulary and can interact through popular social media tools with someone who encourages their passion for learning.
